The Ghost
A Cabinet of Virtue | Furniture Studio 2019
What gives objects value?
The beginning of this conversation starts with how objects sustain through time. It is not innate that an object remains in the life of an individual if it doesn’t serve a purpose. That purpose does not need to be a physical function, it can be emotive, archival, monetary, etc. Where this project looks to intervene is how an object is sustained, in display or in storage, in a way that promotes a deeper intentionality with what should sustain.
What is the product?
Not every person has objects worth keeping. Not every moment requires memorabilia. So where is that line? It lies within the person and their intent on keeping objects. The product will be a transparent archival system. The substance of the furniture piece will be defined by the contents it takes on, promoting the finite idea that the object has importance.
With that parameter on the furniture piece, the remaining definition will be explored through iteration. The exploitation of transparency will shape how the functions of the object will be approached. The addition of an opaque component will seek to ground and protect the objects. In a conversation about what preserves through time, a material that contributes a physical presence of endurance is wood. Rings around a tree create a timeline, but durability after its period of living bring it forward.
